Ali Mau Opens Up

Between Two Beers Newsletter

Ali Mau was one of New Zealand’s most high profile broadcasters and journalists for more than two decades.

You will have seen her on One News, Breakfast, Fair Go, Seven Sharp, Radio Live, Close Up among others, she had a stint on Radio Live, and led the charge on New Zealand's #MeToo movement with Stuff.

She has also just released a book – No Words for This – where she talks for the first time about the monster that haunted her childhood. It’s a shocking, and confronting story that is told with the hope of helping others.

In the episode we talk about:

  • her rise to the top of NZ Media and all the twists and turns along the way

  • being made redundant five times and how she kept bouncing back

  • why her personal relationships became front page news

  • working with some of the great characters in NZ broadcasting: Sir Paul Holmes, Mike Hosking, Paul Henry and Willie Jackson

  • what she is doing now with tika.org

And a content warning: This episode deals with sexual abuse and may not be suitable for all listeners.

Ali's story is complex and powerful and she does such a great job of articulating it.

Best Laugh: Ali’s stories recalling the late Sir Paul Holmes were both sentimental and hilarious.

Best Insight: The amount of work Ali and her team did around bringing #MeTooNZ stories to light.

Biggest Surprise: The shocking details of the abuse that Ali and her family endured at the hands of her father.
