Before the stories fade, capture them forever

Between Two Beers Newsletter

Hi there ,

Capturing people's life stories, before it's too late.

That was the idea behind Reflections - which was initially a Between Two Beers side project.

Seamus and I have shared a bit about Reflections on the podcast, but simply put it’s about giving Kiwi families the chance to discover and preserve the life stories of their loved ones, so they can be passed down through generations.

We believe the past should be a gift, not a mystery. And that got us thinking about how we could best support Kiwi families to create private family documentaries - the kind that reveal the love, loss and laughter that make up the real human experience.

So, a few months ago, we took a deep breath and properly launched our Reflections business.

Actually, we didn’t have to be too brave. A groundswell of enquiries from Between Two Beers listeners made it clear that Kiwis everywhere were ready to capture and preserve their families’ stories.

Since then, our team of Reflections interviewers (led by the superb Suzanne McFadden and Mark Stafford) have visited homes across New Zealand and had the privilege of capturing the life stories of many champion, humble Kiwis.

That’s led to more people getting in touch. But one question keeps cropping up:

“Could we hear from a family that’s actually had a Reflections interview?”

So, I’m pleased to say that on Wednesday, Sept 10, Suzanne McFadden and I are hosting Reflections ‘Uncovered’.

It’s a live Q&A storytelling event that takes you behind the scenes with two Kiwi families who’ve preserved a life story on film.

At Reflections ‘Uncovered’, we’ll talk with Pete Marshall - a larger-than-life character who came into the studio for a 70th birthday gift from his family. His conversation with Seamus and I included tequila, triumphs, and a few tears.

You’ll also meet Lyndal Miller, who arranged for her 90-year-old father Stewart to share his life story with Suze. Since Stewart’s passing, that recording has become an even more treasured gift for Lyndal and her family.

Next Wednesday night, you’ll hear why these two Kiwi families acted, what they might have missed if they hadn’t, and how life changed after the cameras stopped. Expect a few goosebumps.

If you’ve ever thought “we should really do that… someday” then now is your time to join us.
