Between Two Beers Newsletter
Clayton McMillan doesn’t usually do interviews like this; he’s a very private guy.
And with Super Rugby about to kick off for another season we felt incredibly privileged to share so much time and space with Chiefs Head Coach, Clayton McMillan.
But it nearly didn’t happen!
Last year we were invited into Chiefs HQ to speak to players. After the talk, a social media overshare from inside their inner sanctum made its way back to Clayton.
Thankfully after a grovelling apology we smoothed the waters and even spoke about it with him in this conversation which takes you behind the scenes of one of New Zealand’s top Super Rugby clubs.

In the episode you’ll hear about:
Building team culture and values
His unconventional path to the Chiefs job
His relationship with Warren Gatland
His All Blacks coaching aspirations
But it’s not just rugby chat, we spend time learning about the upbringing that shaped the man he is today, stories from his days as a police officer, and the importance he places on Te Ao Māori.
Clayton also said it’s the first and last podcast he’ll ever do! So don’t miss out!
Best Laugh: When Clayton turned out orange after a fake tan mishap in preparing for kapa haka
Best Insight: The depth that Clayton goes into when talking about living a team culture
Biggest Surprise: Clayton’s admission that he didn’t meet his full potential as a professional rugby player
