Pinch Yourself Moments - Behind The Pod
Last week we had another 'pinch yourself' moment.
The Chiefs invited us in to speak with their playing group for an hour at their Ruakura base in Hamilton.
Culture is King at the Chiefs, and they carefully hand-pick a few speakers each season to connect with the team on different levels. In the last couple of years they've had in Lisa Carrington, Ross Taylor, Russell Packer and Chelsea Lane, so it was a huge honour and a great privilege.
We thought long and hard about what parts of our journey would resonate with a group of young professional rugby players, and arrived at a two-part presentation.
Part one focused on Seamus' mental health and well-being journey, the power of storytelling, of holding space for your mates, and what it means to be a good friend.
Part two was about 'the cake and the icing' an analogy we use from former Chiefs sports psychologist David Galbraith. The icing is everything you see on camera and social media. But the cake is all the work thats put in behind the scenes, that you don't see.
The key message was that preparation is the road map to a great performance. When we haven't prepared properly for an episode or speech - it shows, and our success has been built on working harder than the field.
It got emotional in parts, but we've embraced that our story is now wrapped in rawness.
And we had some great feedback afterwards from players and management about the power of those moments.
It was also a special moment meeting Chiefs assistant coach Ross Filipo and reflecting with him our recent episode where Mark Stafford spoke so eloquently about how he was there for him in his time of need.
It was such a special afternoon for us, and an experience we'll treasure.
Business in Between
This week on Business in Between, we’re revisiting our chat with David Higgins from 2021.
David has one of the most fascinating minds in the business of sport with a cunning intelligence and the balls to continually bet big on himself, and win.
In his mid 20s with no boxing experience and little money, he engineered the Fight of the Century between David Tua and Shane Cameron which laid the path for his journey to the top of the boxing world as Joseph Parker’s manager.
This pod is packed with cracking stories like how he got his start in the celebrity speaking scene and how he manufactured a multi-million dollar pay day for Parker in a dream bout with Anthony Joshua.
We also delve into his background growing up in poverty and his subsequent relationship with money and creating Unicorns with Duco Events.
David looks at life a little differently and is an out of the box thinker who has chalked up a fascinating run of business wins.
