Sir Ian Taylor - An Unconventional Life
Between Two Beers Newsletter
Sir Ian Taylor's incredible life has taken an unconventional path.
He was the lead singer of a rock band, he served in the army, worked at a brewery, studied law, became a kids presenter for TVNZ, then a TV star, before setting up his own production company.
Today, he’s one of New Zealand’s top business leaders.
His team at ARL have revolutionised how the world watches sport, he’s earned a knighthood for his services to broadcasting and business and he’s become an outspoken columnist.
In this episode we talk about the day he went to work to shut down his company, and why he didn’t, the origin story of creating graphics for sport and how he secured contracts all over the world, why his company only made their first profit in 2019, his thoughts on politics and the current state of NZ and much, much more.
Sir Ian is one of NZ’s great characters, with so much wisdom to share and love to spread. This was a chat we felt privileged to be a part of with one of NZ’s greatest innovators.
Biggest Surprise: Sir Ian was on the verge of closing ARL in 2008 when a throwaway comment from one of his staff made him reconsider.
Best Insight: Lay in your waka – trust your instincts and feel where you are heading.
Best Laugh: The snakeskin jacket worn by Sir Ian is the hottest piece of fashion ever seen on a Between Two Beers episode
