The best coaching record in NZ sports history?
Between Two Beers Newsletter
Gordy Walker is arguably New Zealand’s greatest coach of all time.
He’s won the Halberg Coach of the Year award six times and in 2021 was crowned the Halberg Coach of the Decade.
We’re pretty sure after listening to his episode you’ll understand why.
In the first half of the episode we learn about Gordy the athlete, his string of Coast-to-Coast wins, multi-day adventure races where he didn’t sleep for days, enduring pain, and where his determination and eye for detail comes from.
And the second half is a journey into the mind of an elite coach. We unpack Gordy’s relationship with Dame Lisa Carrington (her episode here), the secrets to her unparalleled success, stories the public don’t know about the K4 team’s remarkable journey to triple gold in Paris.
This is world class coaching and leadership brilliantly articulated.
Gordy is a private and humble guy and doesn’t really do podcasts like this, so we felt super privileged to be part of this.
Best Laugh: Gordy’s hot and cold tales of competitive tasks with the New Zealand canoe racing team while on tour!
Best Insight: Stick around till the end, the story behind the K4 gold medal is worth an episode on its own!
Biggest Surprise: Gordy’s multisport background and the level of success he had prior to becoming a high performance coach.
