We Missed Our Own Birthday - Behind the Pod

At 8pm on Monday night we received a message from Between Two Beers' first guest, Aaron Scott.

He'd shared with us one of those ‘Facebook Memories’ posts; a pic of the three of us recording together.

He told us to check the date.

It was five years ago, to the day. We’d forgotten our own birthday!

I grabbed a beer and quickly spun into a state of reflection.

That first episode, in 2019, recorded with one microphone, on a dirty desk, in my Hamilton garage, feels like a long time ago now. 

It was hard to click play, but I did, and found it a tough listen-back.

We were raw, our questions were ridiculously long-winded and we didn’t let him talk for the first 15 minutes!

But the one thing that has remained consistent is our inquisitiveness.

We were just as hungry to probe away at Aaron’s story - and learn from it, as we were with guest #193 – Matthew Ridge.

In a co-incidental, and quite surreal, turn of fate, the episode we released on our 5^th birthday, with Matthew Ridge, is on track to be the most popular one we’ve done.

Same structure, same motivation, much different audience.

In its first week, Aaron’s episode did 12 downloads on Soundcloud, and 26 views on Youtube (it took us a while before we uploaded them as ‘podcasts’)

In its first two days Ridgey did 62k views on Youtube, 25,000 podcast downloads and clips from the episode had been viewed more than one million times across our social channels.

And it took us to #1 in NZ.

We’re super excited about bringing our community together on Thursday 21 November to celebrate the ride. IRL, yes that's right in real life. Our first in person event and you are invited.

We’ll be toasting the community that has been built around Between Two Beers, and the countless people that have helped us along the way.
