Why the Smartest CEOs Are Going Off-Script - Behind the Pod

Between Two Beers Newsletter

Our podcast with former Walmart CEO and current Air New Zealand CEO Greg Foran has been our most popular release of 2025.

It was nearly two-hours, unfiltered, and genuine. The epic feedback from listeners meant it was a win for us, Greg and Air New Zealand.

I predict it's an eye into the future – where CEOs of New Zealand’s top companies will start clamouring to get on popular, unscripted, long from podcasts.

It was the first time Greg has done an interview like this. And it was different.

Greg Foran has ditched the script - will other NZ CEO’s follow suit?

Long-form allowed us to talk about his 4am morning routine (75 knuckle pushups!!!), and donkey meat and Ellen Degeneres and running a company with 1.5 million staff - and everything in between.

I would challenge anyone to listen to the episode and not come away with a clear picture of who Greg is and what he stands for.

And in a world of short videos, AI, misinformation, confusion and disruption, we’re continuously hearing from our audience that they prefer a long-form piece of content to ‘make their own mind up’.

Listeners don’t want to be told what is misinformation, or what they should think about someone, they want to hear for themselves.

For companies with charismatic and genuine CEOs, it’s a way to hire talented people, get loyal customers, keep investors happy and build personal brand.

But for it to work, it has to be unscripted, and they have to be human!
